Crested Antbird (Habia Cristata)
The Crested Antbird (Habia cristata) is a medium-sized bird found in the humid and montane forests of northern South America, at altitudes between 800 and 2,000 meters. It measures about 18 to 20 cm and is characterized by its erectile crest and intense reddish plumage in males, while females have more opaque colors. It lives in dense vegetation, where it feeds on fruits, insects, and small invertebrates. It is discreet and difficult to observe, although it is sometimes associated with mixed flocks.
Fun fact: despite its name, it is not a true antbird or a typical piranga, and its taxonomy has been debated for decades due to its unique features within the cardinal group.
