Red-capped Cuckoo-shrike (Eubucco bourcierii)
The Red-headed Manakin (Eubucco bourcierii) is a small, striking bird found in the humid montane forests of Central America and northern South America. It measures between 13 and 15 cm and is distinguished by its bright red head in males, while females have more muted colors. Its body is robust, with a green back and yellow breast, and it has a short, thick beak, typical of barbets. It feeds mainly on fruit and insects and is usually found alone or in pairs. Although its plumage is colorful, it is a discreet bird and difficult to spot. It nests in tree cavities and its repetitive song helps to locate it.
Fun fact: it digs its own nest in soft logs using its strong beak, a surprising task for such a small bird.
